Waterford Estate Antigo 2022 is a Stellenbosch red blend shaped by the estate’s distinctive red clay soils on the Helderberg. The style is plush and fruit-driven, but there is enough Cabernet-led freshness and structure to keep the wine balanced and composed. Oak adds breadth and polish, while the fruit remains firmly at the center of the wine.
The nose opens with red currant, subtle tobacco, and a creamy oak note. On the palate, ripe red fruit is supported by gentle tannins and bright acidity, giving the wine a broad but well-defined shape. The finish is long and textured, with the oak and fruit carrying through in balance. It would pair particularly well with rich casseroles, slow-roasted lamb, braised beef, or other hearty savory dishes.
This is a generous, structured red with enough freshness and tannin to develop further in bottle while remaining approachable now.
The fruit was sourced from Waterford Estate’s red clay soils on the eastern Helderberg slopes. The grapes were hand-harvested, gently destemmed, and fermented as whole berries for 18 days to preserve fruit purity and structure. After pressing, the wine matured in selected French oak barrels, with careful rackings used to support integration and balance before bottling.
