Soft yet expressive, the 2020 Anthonij Rupert Merlot from the Coastal Region offers ripe red and black fruit aromas, including plum, cherry, and subtle blackberry notes. Gentle hints of mocha, cedar, and spice add complexity, while the palate delivers smooth, supple tannins and balanced acidity. Medium-bodied and elegant, it finishes with lingering fruit and a touch of oak, making it a versatile choice for roasted meats, pasta, or enjoying on its own.
Hand-harvested Merlot grapes were carefully sorted and fermented in stainless steel tanks, with gentle pump-overs to extract optimal color and flavor. After fermentation, the wine was matured in French oak barrels, allowing the development of soft tannins, integrated spice notes, and a balanced structure, resulting in a medium-bodied Merlot with elegance, depth, and approachability.

Anthonij Rupert Wines was founded on the farm L’Ormarins in Franschhoek. Originally owned by the late Anthonij Rupert, who passed away in 2001, the farm was taken over by his brother Johann Rupert in 2003. It was Johann Rupert who constructed a state-of-the-art winemaking facility on the estate, and the beginnings of what was to become a sprawling enterprise with a focus on terroir specific wines.
