Luminous, pale gold in color, with an expressive aroma of dried apricots, mango, and honeycomb. Subtle hints of nutmeg and clove add complexity to the pure fruit. Sweet with a finely balanced acidity that lifts the palate without diluting the intensity of the fruit. Layered fruit flavors of kumquat preserve, bruised apple and roasted almonds bring richness, with an endless finish of dried apricot.
Certified heritage bush vines planted in 1988 and 1986 are dry-land farmed in deep sandy soils. At an altitude of 520m above sea level, the vineyards experience a warm climate with cooling evening winds.
Grapes are harvested on six dates and left on straw mats for 3 weeks to dry. This allows sugars and acids to concentrate, and flavors to fully develop. Grapes are destemmed and gently pressed before being transferred into a barrel for fermentation. The fermentation process is stopped by filtration when the wine reaches an alcohol level of approximately 10%. Hooiwijn is matured in seasoned 500ℓ French oak barrels for 6 months before being bottled.

The west coast is a place that invigorates one’s soul, understanding and appreciation of the simple things in life. For many it is a harsh, desert-like unknown frontier, but for those who have experienced its energy and unspoilt beauty, it becomes a life-enriching place. The grapes for Donkiesbaai wines comes from the unassuming region of Piekenierskloof, which lies about 80km inland from the coast. Unirrigated bush vines are planted in deep sandy soils. Elevated sites have a warm climate with cooling evening winds. The resulting wines offer complexity and finesse in an approachable style.
