Bold, fruity aromas of pineapple, lime cordial, and yellow peach mingle with notes of biscotti and nougat. Rich and textured on the palate with elderflower, peach and macadamia. The intensity of the fruit is balanced by well-integrated oak. The distinctive complexity of the Donkiesbaai Steen stems from the age of the bush vines, the majority of which are over 38 years old. These old vines consistently produce small crops of intensely flavored and expressive fruit.
The Steen is made up of three components: 75% is fermented and then matured in a combination of new and seasoned 500l French oak barrels. 15% is fermented spontaneously and matured on the lees in concrete eggs. Bâtonnage is done monthly for textural mouthfeel.

The west coast is a place that invigorates one’s soul, understanding and appreciation of the simple things in life. For many it is a harsh, desert-like unknown frontier, but for those who have experienced its energy and unspoilt beauty, it becomes a life-enriching place. The grapes for Donkiesbaai wines comes from the unassuming region of Piekenierskloof, which lies about 80km inland from the coast. Unirrigated bush vines are planted in deep sandy soils. Elevated sites have a warm climate with cooling evening winds. The resulting wines offer complexity and finesse in an approachable style.
