The 2022 Pinotage displays generous flavours of ripe red fruit like strawberries and cherries, with subtle hints of dark chocolate and toasted oak on the nose. The red fruit follows on the palate, with the sweet oak character beautifully balanced by the fresh acidity leaving an elegant finish.
The grapes were harvested in at 26° Balling and fermented on their skins, imparting colour, flavour and fine tannins, until the wine was dry. During fermentation four pump-overs per day took place to encourage maximum extraction. The wine then spent 12 months in French oak barrels, of which 40% was new oak, with 20% in second, 20% in third and 20% in fourth fill barrels

Commander Simon van der Stel of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) arrived at the Cape supply station in 1679. Estranged from his wife, he arrived in the company of his children and sister-in-law, Cornelia Six. Back in the Netherlands, van der Stel had gained a solid background in viticulture at his vineyards in Muiderberg. There, he learned the art of wine and brandy making, which he was soon to implement here in the Cape.
