Opaque purple-red color. Bold aromas of plums, blackberries, mulberries, rich vanilla, layers of smoke, and roasted nuts on the nose. Followed by a palate packed with plums, cherries, black figs, pomegranate, dark chocolate, blackberries, and spicy oak. The beautifully integrated, plush, creamy tannins combine with satisfying acidity, resulting in a wonderfully balanced wine with a long finish, promising excellent maturation potential.

The 2022 vintage was the latest in the past 25 years, about two weeks later than usual. We experienced a proper cold winter with sufficient rain, which resulted in a bud break that was two weeks late. The earlier part of the season was quite cool, with December showing lower maximum and minimum temperatures. January was more moderate, with a few hot days. The slow ripening conditions led to concentrated fruit development and increased palate weight.

Kanonkop is a fourth-generation family estate, originally purchased by JW Sauer, a cabinet member in the parliament of the Union of South Africa. Kanonkop Estate is situated on the lower slopes of the Simonsberg Mountain in the Stellenbosch region of the Cape. It is located between Stellenbosch and Paarl on the R44 and falls within a ward called Simonsberg, more commonly known as the “red wine bowl” of South Africa.
It has earned a reputation, both at home and abroad, as an area that produces the best wines in the country. In addition to the solid foundation on which the estate’s winemaking principles are based, it is also blessed with ideal soils, cool sea breezes, and long summer days, creating the perfect climate for growing grapes.
