Layers of blackberry, hedgerow fruit, and subtle mocha rise from the glass, lifted by hints of baking spice and pencil shavings. On the palate, this 2021 Optima Red Blend from Anthonij Rupert Wines is luxuriously plush and silky, with rich notes of dark fruitcake, black cherry, and warming spice. Fine oak integration brings elegance and balance, while bright acidity adds lift and freshness. Complex yet approachable, this Coastal Region red wine is supple, polished, and endlessly drinkable. A refined choice for collectors and everyday connoisseurs alike.
The 2021 vintage offered ideal cool-climate conditions, allowing for slow, even ripening and excellent fruit concentration with fresh acidity. Grapes for Optima were hand-picked from select vineyard blocks, transported in small lug boxes, and meticulously double-sorted using optical technology. Fermentation took place in a mix of Nico Velo concrete and stainless steel tanks, followed by extended maceration for depth. Aged 20 months in French oak (30% new), then bottle-aged for two years for perfect harmony.
Winemaker: Dawie Botha
Anthonij Rupert Wyne was founded on the farm L’Ormarins in Franschhoek. Originally owned by the late Anthonij Rupert, who passed away in 2001, the farm was taken over by his brother Johann Rupert in 2003. It was Johann Rupert who constructed a state-of-the-art winemaking facility on the estate, and the beginnings of what was to become a sprawling enterprise with a focus on terroir specific wines.
