A bold yet refined expression of Pinotage, the Neil Ellis Bottelary Hills 2020 displays a deep, dark hue and inviting aromas of ripe plum, blackberry, and a hint of thyme.
The palate opens with fresh black fruit, seamlessly evolving into fine, chalky tannins that bring texture and balance to the mid-palate. Elegant and structured with a lingering finish.

Harvest commenced on the 20th of February. Grapes were harvested at 25°B with a total acid of 7.5 g/ℓ and a pH of 3.3. Fermentation initiated in stainless steel tanks. Whole berry ferment underwent a series of light pumpovers and punching after which the wine was racked off to the barrel to complete alcoholic fermentation. Malolactic fermentation took place in barrels. This wine spent 14 months in 50% new French oak barrels, the balance in 2nd fill and Neutral barrels.

Two distinct styles underpin our winemaking philosophy. Our single vineyard and single block vines are celebrated for their distinctive site and sense of place and include Whitehall Chardonnay from Elgin and Klein Gustrouw in the Jonkershoek Valley. These contribute to exceptional Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay, as well as old vine Grenache from Piekenierskloof. Similarly, our wines are sourced from wards and districts that represent the best of what that region or sub-region can offer.
No single vineyard can satisfy the needs of all grape varieties. We select vineyards where individual varieties excel. Emphasis placed on caring viticultural practices by dedicated growers together with careful winemaking contribute to this pursuit of excellence in the art of winemaking.
