Piedmont / Piemonte

Piedmont (pronounced Piemonte in Italian) is one of Italy’s largest wine regions and it’s population consists of one third of the total population of Italy. The most notable varietals from Piedmont is Barolo and Barbaresco (which are made form the Nebbiolo grape). Both these wines are perfect for ageing. The longer they lie-down, the more polished the tannins become and the more velvety the wine drinks. Piemonte is located in the the foothills of the Alps which borders Switzerland and France. The valley and the surrounding mountains contribute to the region’s fog layer which helps the ripening of the Nebbiolo grape. It gets its name from “Nebbia”, the local’s name for fog.
