The Rust en Vrede Estate Red 2015 is a benchmark Stellenbosch blend, crafted in a vintage celebrated for its structure and precision. Built around Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, and Merlot, this wine reflects the estate’s long-standing focus on producing world-class reds with depth and balance.
In the glass, the wine shows a crimson red hue, opening with lifted aromas of violets and jasmine, layered with notes of fresh leather, tobacco leaf, mulberry, and forest floor. On the palate, dark fruit flavors of blueberry and blackcurrant are complemented by earthy undertones, creating a wine that is both complex and harmonious. The tannins are soft and velvety, carrying through to a long, elegant finish that showcases both finesse and structure.
This is a refined and food-driven red, pairing beautifully with grilled meats, lamb, game, and rich, savory dishes.

Following an early bud break and arid growing season, careful vineyard management ensured balanced ripening despite a challenging harvest. The grapes were fermented with precision, with malolactic fermentation taking place in barrel to enhance texture and integration.
The wine was then matured for 18 months in 100% French oak barrels (medium toast), allowing for the development of structure, spice, and complexity. This careful oak regime contributes to the wine’s polished tannins and layered profile while preserving its fruit expression.

For 315 years Rust en Vrede has stood peacefully among the vineyards of Stellenbosch. The company and the estate are now headed up by Jean Engelbrecht and their family has specialized in producing only red wine with the focus on Shiraz, Cabernet, and Merlot. The underground cellar of the estate was the first of its kind for a privately owned South African winery. Designed by renowned architect Mr. Gawie Fagan, the perfectly temperature-controlled environment is of invaluable benefit to the production and bottle maturation of unique wines.
Rust en Vrede is a remarkable example of exquisite landscaping. At home and abroad, this unassuming Stellenbosch Estate has made a name for itself far beyond its modest, but infinitely charming, 55 hectares.
