Elegant and distinctive, the Steenberg Nebbiolo 2021 opens with savory hints of heirloom tomato relish, aniseed, and earthy porcini, layered with sour cherry, rooibos tea leaf, and delicate rose petals. The palate shows Nebbiolo’s signature tart acidity and fine-grained tannins, balanced by a surprisingly rounded, lighter mouthfeel. Bright flavors of cherry, raspberry, and tobacco leaf linger with impressive length. While beautifully expressive in youth, this wine will reward cellaring for 7–10 years. Perfect alongside springbok fillet or game dishes with berry accents.
Hand-harvested at 25°B, the Nebbiolo grapes were fermented in stainless steel at 27°C for 15 days with pump-overs to extract color and tannin. After malolactic conversion, the wine matured for 24 months in a mix of 225L, 400L, and 500L French oak barrels before bottling in August 2023, enhancing complexity and balance.
