The Ernie Els Big Easy Red 2023 is a polished, Cabernet Sauvignon-led blend from the slopes of the Helderberg, offering a balanced expression of Stellenbosch fruit with a smooth, approachable style. Inspired by Ernie Els’ nickname, this wine combines structure with an easy-drinking appeal.
In the glass, it shows a ruby core with a translucent rim, opening with aromas of black and red cherry, layered with notes of cinnamon, all-spice, and tobacco leaf. The Cabernet Sauvignon provides structure, while Shiraz adds a lift of spice and aromatic freshness. Subtle contributions from Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec bring added depth, with hints of cacao, red pepper, and tomato leaf. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied and harmonious, with silky tannins and fresh acidity supporting a core of layered fruit. The finish is smooth, balanced, and quietly complex.
A versatile, food-friendly red that pairs effortlessly with grilled meats, burgers, pasta, and everyday dining.

The grapes were sourced from selected vineyard parcels on the Helderberg Mountain, where altitude (around 250m) and proximity to the Atlantic Ocean extend the ripening period and enhance phenolic development. Each varietal component was vinified separately, allowing for careful management of extraction and balance.
Following fermentation, the wine was matured in oak barrels to integrate tannins and build complexity while maintaining the wine’s approachable style. The final blend was assembled to achieve balance, texture, and drinkability, staying true to the Big Easy philosophy.

As one of South Africa's leading ambassadors and one of the most recognizable faces in the world of sport, it is befitting that Ernie chose Stellenbosch to produce his wines. In 1999 the concept of Ernie Els Wines was born and with the help of award-winning winemaker Louis Strydom, they produced the maiden, 2000 vintage of Ernie Els - a classic Bordeaux blend.
The marketing synergy between the wine and Ernie's classic golf swing were apparent. The intention from the outset was to focus on delivering a quality product that could hold its own in the company of the world's finest wines.
Naturally the plan was to start on a small scale, ensuring the packaging and presentation, marketing and distribution, were of a standard that was in-line with their vision for a premium product.
While men may dream different dreams, they are driven by the same quest: to reach for, and to accomplish perfection. No two pursuits bare the truth of this more than the perfect round of golf and the perfect bottle of wine.
Ernie Els life has mirrored a passion for excellence, which has been clearly reflected in his exceptional sporting achievements. His focus, discipline and commitment have been the foundation of his success, and these factors are evident in his quest to produce premium wine.
