Description

Bold. Rustic. Unapologetically Different. This dark, full-bodied red blend explodes with aromas of ripe plum, cassis, and warming spices like cinnamon and cardamom. On the palate, you’ll find layers of dark fruit, liquorice, and firm, grippy tannins that bring structure and depth. Crafted from Tempranillo, Tannat, and a splash of Petite Sirah, this wine is a robust tribute to the great red blends of Spain, Portugal, and the South of France—reimagined in the Cape. Its bold tannin and dense core make it a perfect pairing for hearty meals or cellaring for 5–8 years to soften and evolve. A wine for adventurers, fire-cooked feasts, and the stories that follow.
Each component of this bold blend was destemmed, crushed, and fermented separately in open-top stainless steel tanks. During fermentation, we performed regular pump-overs and gentle punch-downs up to four times a day to extract vibrant color, rich flavor, and firm tannins. Once pressed, the wine was matured for 18 months in medium-toasted oak barrels, a crucial step that softens the tannins and layers in depth, complexity, and refined structure.

Winemaker: Anthony de Jager
Fairview is a working farm, housing a collection of micro-businesses all sharing in a common goal – to craft artisanal and sustainable produce, with a focus on fine wine and cheese. Everything they do is driven by their philosophy of being honest, honoring their heritage and ensuring their ingenuity.

Eager to explore a wider range of wines using grapes grown in optimal conditions, Charles Back abandoned the estate wine concept in the 1980s, choosing rather to “go where the terroir is”. Today, they are one of the few farms that proudly own all their own vineyards, with land in Paarl, Darling, Swartland and Stellenbosch.
