Description

Super Single Vineyards Granietbult Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 is a Stellenbosch red built in a more generous New World style, where ripe fruit, extraction, and oak are brought together with enough control to keep the wine composed. Sourced from south-facing vines on an elevated granite-rich site, it combines the concentration expected from Cabernet Sauvignon with a more perfumed aromatic profile and a firm but polished tannic frame. This is a wine for drinkers who enjoy Cabernet with both fruit weight and structure.

The nose opens with concentrated aromas of red fruit and blackberry, carrying through onto a rich, highly extracted palate. Despite its power, the tannins are refined, giving the wine shape without making it feel coarse, and the finish runs long with good persistence. There is enough fruit depth here to stand up to grilled ribeye, roast lamb, beef short ribs, or mature hard cheeses, where the wine’s density and tannic frame can settle naturally into the meal.

Already substantial in style, this is a Cabernet Sauvignon that should continue to evolve positively in bottle, with the fruit and oak becoming even more integrated over time.
This Cabernet Sauvignon comes from south-facing vines planted on an elevated granite hill with decomposed rock and clay soils, a site that helps shape both the wine’s concentration and its structural grip. The fruit was cold-soaked for 10 days at 8°C under a CO2 blanket before fermentation, which then proceeded up to a maximum of 28°C. Pump-overs were carried out three times daily to manage temperature and extraction in the cap. After fermentation, the wine underwent 30 days of post-maceration to deepen structure and flavor. Both free-run and press juice were used, and the wine was matured for 18 months in French oak barrels, 30% of them new.
I was fortunate to grow up in the beautiful valley of Stellenboschkloof, wedged between Bottelary and Polkadraai Hills.

After a few years working alongside my father in the vineyards and cellar, I decided to start my own business. The neighbouring farm Canettevallei that lies adjacent to the Ou Kaapse Hardepad, became home to my family and boutique winery called Super Single Vineyards (SSV).

During my early years as a young winemaker, I learned from great mentors in St Emilion and Tuscany, the simple truth that a great vineyard makes a great wine. From that moment, my search for the best possible vineyards will never be complete – hence our name ‘Super Single Vineyards’. Stellenbosch is the best area for the classic Bordeaux grape varieties that we use predominantly in PELLA, our Coastal range. In 2004, we planted the first vineyard near the town of Sutherland in the Highland Karoo area, at an altitude of 1500m. We use these grapes for our Mount Sutherland range.
