Blaauwklippen De Blaauwe Klip 2022 is a full-bodied Stellenbosch red blend drawn from the estate’s vineyards in the Golden Triangle, a part of the region long associated with structured, age-worthy reds. This is a wine built with depth and seriousness in mind, combining dark fruit, savory detail, and a broad mid-palate in a style that feels firmly grounded in classic Stellenbosch territory. For drinkers who enjoy red blends with substance, polish, and a clear food focus, this is a compelling bottle.
The nose opens with dark cassis, cigar box, and a richer note reminiscent of plum-chocolate pudding. On the palate, the wine is vibrant despite its weight, with velvet tannins giving it shape and a serious mid-palate carrying the fruit and oak detail through to a long finish. There is plenty of concentration here, but the wine stays composed rather than heavy. It would be especially well suited to roast beef, lamb shoulder, short ribs, or other more substantial meat dishes where its depth and tannic frame can settle naturally into the richness of the food.
Already impressive in youth, this is a red blend with enough structure and concentration to continue developing well over the coming years.
The fruit for this blend came from nine vineyard sites on Blaauwklippen in the Stellenbosch Golden Triangle, planted to five different cultivars. The soils range from medium- to high-potential Tukulu to poorer Klapmuts soils, bringing a range of structural and fruit expressions to the final wine. The vineyards include both narrow and wider spacing, with annual yields ranging from 5 to 7 tons per hectare. This multi-site estate approach supports both concentration and complexity in the finished blend.
