Originally inspired by the classic taste and palate of Italian varieties, Sangiovese and Nebbiolo, the importation of these grape varieties in 1989 led to the development of this highly successful blend, with the first commercial release of the Hannibal label 12 years later.
The name Hannibal was adopted as a symbolic expression of the synergy between Africa and the winelands of France and Italy, linked two thousand years ago under the command of the classic Carthaginian general and his elephants.
Following alcoholic fermentation in tank, the individual components are barreled down for a lengthy secondary malolactic fermentation, with Sangiovese taking up to nine months to complete. The final blend was assembled after a year of small-barrel maturation (17% new) and bottled in July 2021.
