Description

Paserene Union Syrah 2020 is a Tulbagh red built in a darker, more restrained style, where fruit, mineral character, and structure are held in careful balance. Rather than pushing sheer ripeness, it leans into Syrah’s more savory side, with a sense of warmth and broodiness that feels natural rather than forced. This is a wine with presence, but also composure, making it especially appealing for drinkers who enjoy full-bodied reds with both depth and control.

The nose brings together primary dark fruit and charry mineral notes, giving the wine an immediately compelling mix of ripeness and earth-driven tension. On the palate, it is broad and supple, with generous tannins and a measured line of acidity that keeps the wine steady and long rather than sharp. That balance gives the wine its shape and should allow it to evolve slowly over time. At the table, it would be especially well suited to grilled lamb, smoked meats, venison, or slow-braised beef, where its savory depth and tannic frame can settle naturally into the richness of the dish.

Although already approachable, this is clearly a wine made for the long haul, with the structure and balance to develop over the next two to three decades.
The grapes were fermented in concrete open-top tanks for about a month, a method that supports structure and texture while allowing for careful management of extraction. The wine was then transferred to third- and fourth-fill barrels to preserve bright fruit integrity rather than mark the wine heavily with oak. It spent 16 months in barrel before bottling, followed by a further year in bottle prior to release, giving the wine time to settle and gain early harmony.

The name Paserene comes from the Latin word Passeriformes, the order of traveling and free birds containing swifts and swallows. Paserene is situated in the quaint town of Franschhoek and is home to their award-winning wine range. A professional and contemporary tasting lounge is situated on the property.
